LA Kings – July 1 Free Agency Update

Posted on July 1, 2012 by

Back on the 24th we wrote a post explaining  how the Free Agency works. You can read that here. So today is the day and the frenzy began this morning at 9:00 est. So far there are only two signings on the Kings today.

* Dustin Penner – Signed for $3.25 million for one year. Penner signed for exactly $1 million less to stay on the Kings. This is great for both sides. First, we get to keep our Pens and our complete Stanley Cup team intact and Penner gets to stay with us and prove himself for this next season. I know that Penner could have been offered a longer contract somewhere else, but he knew he wanted to stay here and he knew he had a bad regular season so the salary reduction was warranted. Now we get him for another year and Penner gets to show how he can score in the regular season and hopefully sign a longer contract next year. Yes!

* Jeff Zatkoff – AHL goalie who is ready for the NHL. Zatkoff was our #2 goalie in the minors behind Martin Jones. The Kings actually brought Jones up to practice during the playoffs and skipped Zatkoff. With signing Quick for 10 years and Bernier staying as the backup (as of today), Jones and Berube in AHL, there was just no room for him. But he is a great goalie and I wish him all the luck in Pittsburgh.

Kings Unrestricted free agents:

Colin Fraser ***(Kings signed Fraser to a 2 year $1.65-million contract)
Dustin Penner ***(Kings signed Penner to a 1 year $3.25-million contract)
Jarret Stoll ***(Kings signed Stoll to a three-year contract worth an average of $3.25 million per season)
Ethan Moreau ***(Moreau has left, he went to the Montreal Canadiens as scout)
Jeff Zatkoff ***( Zatkoff signed with Pittsburgh for 2 years, will start off in Penguins AHL)

As for the unrestricted free agents left, it looks like none will be signed by the Kings and I really do not know if they will be picked up. We’ll keep an eye out on them.

Unrestricted free agents not yet signed:

Scott Parse (($900,000 last season)

Trent Hunter

Patrick Mullen

Ray Kaunisto

Good luck to all of you!
