Well, I was wrong. I called Brent Sutter the next Assistant Coach for the Kings. But today the Kings announced Davis Payne as the new Asst Coach. Remember Payne? He was the one hired after the Blues fired Andy Murray and then fired him after only a few games and hired Ken Hitchcock. So at first, you think, hmmm, is this a good idea? Well, actually yes, yes it is. Payne has a great record coaching in the AHL and ECHL. He is young (42) and very experienced. Some time as an assistant coach is a great move for him, especially if he wants to head coach in the future.
Here are a few facts about Payne:
- Payne appeared in 22 NHL games with the Boston Bruins and played a total of eight professional seasons in the AHL, International Hockey League (IHL) and ECHL.
- 2006-07 ECHL Coach of the Year
- He established a .691% winning percentage over four years as head coach for the Alaska Aces, the Blues’ ECHL affiliate.
- Payne guided the ACES to three consecutive trips to the Conference Finals; it was the first time in 15 years and only the second time in ECHL history that a team advanced to the ECHL’s Final Four in three straight seasons.
Payne, who is 289-142-45 (.654%) in seven seasons as an ECHL head coach between Alaska and the Pee Dee Pride, remains second all-time in ECHL history with 50 postseason victories, 12 of which came during his three years with Pee Dee.
I think he will do just fine.
